If in 1803 the population of the province was 350 thousand people, then, according to the All-Russian Population Census in 1897, there were 2 million 733 612 inhabitants. In 1897 in the province lived 1 million 462 thousand Ukrainians, 575.3 thousand Russians, 322.5 thousand Jews, 147.2 thousand Moldovans, 123.4 thousand Germans. The rest were Bulgarians, Poles, Belorussians.
