The Apostle Andrew the First Called pointed to the place where the church is today, saying that it is blessed by God and that once there will be a city with many churches. ("The Primary Chronicle" or "The Tale of Bygones Years" by the author Nestor the Chronicler).
Already in 1215 at the place of the modern St. Andrew's Church the Church of Holy Cross was built, that existed until the beginning of 17th century. Afterwards a wooden church was constructed at its place, that burned out during a fire in the end 17th century.
On May 27, 1753, in Kyiv it was built the St. Andrew's Church to commemorate the visit of the Empress Elizabeth, daughter of tzar Peter the First. The baroque style cathedral was built by prominent architect Francesco Rastrelli. The one of two of his architectural pearls, which are located in Kyiv, was finished.

- In general, there are 74 icons (paintings) of the 18th century and two more large paintings of the 19th century in a church;
- The iconostasis of the church consists 39 icons of the middle of the 18th century.
This year, on October 18th, according to the decisions of Verkhovna Rada (the Parlament of Ukraine), it was passed for the use to Ecumenical Patriarchy, on the territory of which the stauropigy was created. At the same time, the church remains in a property of the state of Ukraine.
St. Andrew's Church was opened until 1932, when Soviet government decided to stop the worship. In 1935, the church, as an affiliate, became a part of the historic and cultural reserve "All-Ukrainian Museum City" [7]. In 1939 it hosted a branch of the Sofia Anti-Religious Museum. In the years of the Second World War, the worship in the St. Andrew's Church was restarted.
In 1961, the church was again closed for worship. On July 10, 1962, the St. Andrew's Church was transferred to the balance of the State Building of the Ukrainian Soviet Republic, on January 10, 1968 - to the State Architectural and Historical Preserve "Sofiysky Museum". On September 10, 1968, St. Andrew's Church was opened as an architectural-historical museum-branch of the Reserve.
From 1949 to 1954, a reconstruction of the church was held, during which the constructions of the roofs were repaired, the wall was damaged, the roofs and the covering of the porcelain were replaced. At the same time, the preservation of the church paintings was conducted by Fyodor Demidchuk.
In 1965-1967, in the Andrew's church, the strengthen of the brickwork of the facades was done, its retaining walls were transposed, the repair of the covering of the porch was made as well as the repair of the structures of the roof.
In 1974-1987, there was held a complete restoration of the church, based on the copies of the author's drawings B.-P. Rastrelli in the graphic collection of the Viennese museum "Albertina".
Since 1987 the church has been being a member of the "Sofia of Kyiv" National Reserve.
Before Euro-2012 soccer championship there was held the work of the strengthening the slope on which the cathedral is located, and the reconstruction of St. Andrew Descent road.
There is a legend that on the spot where now the Dnieper flows, there was the sea. But when it came St. Andrew and set a cross - the sea has gone down. However, the part of that sea has left behind the Andrew's mountain. That's why, supposedly, no bells in the church. According to the legend, after the first sound of the bell the water would "wake up" and would fill up not only Kiev, but the whole Left Bank. The church triple was hit by a lightening. In particular, during a thunderstorm in 1892, an electric spark penetrated into the temple, spoiled gilding and crashed the plaster of three windows. Andrew's Church was also depicted in the film "For Two Hares". That is why not far the building there is a sculpture dedicated to the heroes of this film.
