Pyrogov Street of Vinnytsia town runs to the southwest from the city centre and at the far end of it, beyond the Botanical Garden, lies the former residence of Nicholas (Nikolai) Pirogov (1810-1881). This great Russian scholar and pedagogue, the initiator of surgery in field hospitals, spent the last twenty years of his life here in the village of Sheremetko (now Pirogovo). Now the Pyrogov Memorial Museum has been set up here. The embalmed body of the world-famous surgeon lies in a crypt in a red brick chapel a few kilometres to the west of the estate. A monument to Nikolai Pirogov has been erected in the street bearing his name. Modern Vinnytsia State Medical University was named after Nikolay Pyrogov.
